Program Overview
RIFLI is a collaborative of 6 public library systems in Rhode Island who work together to provide English as a Second Language, Citizenship Preparation, Distance Learning and Workforce Development classes at their libraries. Participating library systems include the Cranston Public Library, East Providence Public Library, Pawtucket Public Library, Providence Community Library and Providence Public Library. In 2010-11, RIFLI offered 16 classes at 9 libraries and community centers in the collaborative. Providence Public Library is RIFLI's fiscal agent. West Warwick Public Library is an independent affiliate of RIFLI.
The program is staffed by Lead Teachers, a Literacy Program Coordinator, an Assistant Literacy Program Coordinator and trained volunteers. The Lead Teacher designs lessons based on student needs and interests. Learners are placed in classes according to their skill level. RIFLI offers Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced ESL levels.
At the Auburn Library, adults are in class at the same time as their children. Children, ages 3-10, are under the supervision of the Children's Teacher and participate in activities and games that build their language skills and literacy and receive homework help.
The classes meet from 2 1/2-10 hours a week. Classes generally follow the school-year calendar (September-June). There is a waiting list for classes.
