Program Overview
RIFLI is a collaborative of four public library systems in Rhode Island working together to provide family literacy programs at their branches. Participating library systems include Cranston Public Library, East Providence Public Library, Pawtucket Public Library and Providence Public Library. As of September 2006, we have 17 programs taking place at 13 library branches and community centers in the collaborative. Providence Public Library is the host site of the program overseeing fiscal management of the program as well as providing office space and various in-kind administrative supports.. West Warwick Public Library is an independent affiliate of RIFLI.
The program is staffed by a Lead Teacher, a Children's Teacher, an ESL Computer Teacher, and trained volunteers. Adults are in class at the same time as their children. The Lead Teacher designs English as a Second Language lessons based on student needs and interests. At some sites, the learners are divided by skill level into small groups while at other sites there is whole group instruction. Children, ages 3-12, are under the supervision of the Children's Teacher and participate in activities and games that build their language skills and literacy and often correspond to the adult learner's themes. At least once a week, children and adults work together on a family-centered literacy activity. The ESL Computer Teacher designs lessons that teach basic computer knowledge and help increase English language skills. Computer lessons are part of the weekly class time. Frequently, trained volunteers work with individual students to help them reach specific goals.
The classes meet for 2 hours, twice a week or once a week for three hours. Classes follow the school-year calendar (September-May). Summer classes are also offered. There are often large waiting lists that students may encounter when they come to register. Families and beginning level learners are considered first for enrollment.
