Where are the classes?
Most libraries are on bus routes. See the class information page for details on locations and directions. (Travel vouchers may be available depending on the site.)

What is done in class?
The Family Literacy Program is a first-step literacy program for Non-English speakers who would like help in reading, writing, and speaking in English. In class, tutors work with a small group of learners practicing these skills or large groups work with the Adult ESL Teacher. Students also learn to use the computer. The content of the classes is designed around the needs and requests of the learners. Weekly, adults and children work together in group activities.

May I bring my children?
Yes, children ages 3 to 12 years old are welcome. This is a family program designed for both adults and their children. Children will work on appropriate activities designed to build literacy skills. Families are given preference in enrollment.

How much does it cost?
The Family Literacy Program is free.

How do I sign up?
Come to the first night of class or call (401) 455-8041 to arrange an appointment. To register you will fill out a registration form that asks your name, address, phone number, and other questions. Your teacher will talk with you and your family about your goals and interests.

How long is each session?
Most RIFLI classes meet twice a week. Each session is two hours. Some classes are one day a week for three hours.

How long does the program last?
The Family Literacy Program runs from September through May. Summer classes are also offered.

Do I have to come to every class?
Yes, you and your registered children must come as much as possible! It is important to come to each class since the program meets only twice a week.

Do I work with one person or a group?
Tutors work with a small group of learners or with a large group and the teacher. Occasionally students will be provided a tutor for one-on-one work or referred to another agency.

Will they teach me how to use the computer?
Yes, you will learn basic computer skills. Topics like e-mail and the Internet will also be taught.

Can this class help me get my GED or Citizenship?
The Family Literacy Program offers Citizenship preparation classes at Knight Memorial, East Providence and Cranston. RIFLI does not offer GED courses. The Lead ESL Teacher can refer you to a place that offers GED courses. This class may help prepare to enter a GED in the future.

Do I have to have a library card to be in the program? No, but we encourage you to get one so that you can take out books and practice reading. It may be necessary to take out materials for class work. The library card is free.
