Volunteers
Volunteer tutors are an essential part of the success of RIFLI. The success of our program has always been due in large part to the enthusiasm and strengths our volunteer tutors bring to their students. We look for volunteers who have an interest in working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. Tutors with an education or foreign language background are helpful.
Volunteer opportunities include working with either the adults or the children. As a volunteer with the adults, you can expect to work with a small group of learners on their reading, writing and/or conversation skills. There are also opportunities to help adults prepare for their citizenship exam or to assist them on the computer. Volunteers in the children's program help facilitate individualized learning and support the children's teacher in supervising play and classroom activities.
Volunteer tutors are provided with ongoing training. This includes both an orientation program and meeting and planning time with the teachers at each site. We ask tutors to commit to at least a full class a week.
Current volunteer opportunities
We currently are in need of volunteers for 2008-09 classes including small group ESL tutoring with adults, Children's class volunteers, Computer volunteers and for special administrative projects.
